WHAT IS THE LOCAL FOOD CHALLENGE?

The Local Food Challenge (LFC) wants residents of the counties of Stormont, Dundas, & Glengarry (SDG), Prescott-Russell (PR), and the City of Cornwall & Area to (re)discover the local food sources in their community, choose more local food, and share their local food experiences!

TRACK THE DAY, LOCATION, AND TYPE OF FOOD YOU CHOOSE

Use the LFC tracking form, your LFC account, or your own method to keep track of the date, location, and type of local food you choose (pick, buy, & catch) from August 12 to 28, 2016.  You have until September 10, 2016 to track the day, location, and type of local food you chose during the LFC.

HOW THE LOCAL FOOD CHALLENGE WORKS

  • Register yourself as a participant or a partner by August 24, 2016.
  • Choose (pick, buy, & catch) more local food from August 12 to 28, 2016.
  • (Re)discover local food sources in SDG, PR, and the city of Cornwall & Area (e.g., farmer’s market, restaurant, community garden, or other local food program or business).
  • Find out about local food events in SDG, PR, and the city of Cornwall & Area.
  • Share your local food experiences, recipes, tips & more through LFC social media.

WHERE TO FIND LOCAL FOOD

Not sure where to find local food? Consider using the PR&SDG Local Food Map to (re)discover your nearest local food farmer, producer, retailer or other local food business. Or perhaps make your way down to your weekly farmers’ market, purchase a Green Food Box or find a community garden.  In any case, do not worry! We have dozens of partnering community businesses, farmers and restaurants who would love to help you (re) discover the local food sources in your community.

WHY LOCAL FOOD?

By eating local you are supporting your local economy, keeping money in your community and maintaining a personal relationship with the people who produce your food. Eating fresh, local, seasonal foods is also an excellent way to enjoy a greater variety of nutrient-packed fruits and vegetables.  By choosing local foods, you are also ensuring that your food travels a shorter distance to get to your plate, thus reducing air pollution and refrigeration.

INTERESTED IN BEING A PARTNER?

We are looking for local food organizations, community partners and educators with an interest in local food, farmers, local food producers and vendors, restaurant owners, and other local food businesses and programs in the SDG, PR, and city of Cornwall & Area.  We need your help to make the 2016 LFC a success!  If you have not done so already, please register as a LFC Partner.
